Appendix A
The Reader’s Laboratory
“We had the experience but missed the meaning.”

The afterimage may still be there.
Good.
Bring it with you.
The story is over. The record is closed. This is something different.
Think of it as a small laboratory.
No witnesses. No verdict. No one is trying to win.
We are going to take a few of the instruments you have already encountered — the Mirror, metaphor, translation, recursion, cross-examination — and turn them around.
This time, the specimen is not my mind.
It is the space between information and yours.
The exercises ahead follow a sequence that emerged from the work you have just read:
Elsewhere, I call that sequence PRISM.
You do not need to memorize the acronym. You do not need to admire the acronym. You are under no obligation to purchase it a tiny graduation cap.
You only need to notice when language has moved — and decide what authority that movement deserves.
Let’s see what happens there.
I want to show you some of the machinery underneath what just happened.
Not only the machinery inside the machine.
The machinery between one mind and another.
Information does not simply appear before us. Something selected it. Something framed it. Something translated it. Something decided what came first, what disappeared, what deserved emphasis, and apparently what deserved a tiny notification capable of destroying every intention you had for the next twenty minutes.
So perhaps the sequence is not:
perception→language→judgment
but something closer to:
world→selection→framing→representation→perception→interpretation→judgment
And every arrow matters.
At each arrow, something may be preserved, altered, emphasized, compressed, omitted, misunderstood, or made newly visible. By the time information reaches judgment, it may feel immediate even though it has already traveled through several rooms.
Conveniently, I see the world in black and white.
Apparently I decided to spend several hundred pages investigating black boxes and translating white papers.
We all need hobbies.
I
Why Am I Seeing This?
Before asking whether something is true, brilliant, outrageous, terrifying, or urgently deserving of transmission to the family group text, try an earlier question:
Why am I seeing this?
A friend chose to tell you.
An editor chose the headline.
A search engine ranked the result.
A platform recommended the post.
A company designed the interface.
A language model generated this answer instead of innumerable other answers it might have produced.
Something happened before the information reached you.
Selection preceded perception.
That does not require a villain. Sometimes the system is optimizing for accuracy. Sometimes relevance. Sometimes clarity, speed, persuasion, profit, engagement, or keeping you on the couch until you suddenly know an alarming amount about a stranger’s kitchen renovation.
The useful questions begin before Do I believe this?
Ask:
- ·Why this?
- ·Why now?
- ·Why in this form?
- ·What was excluded?
- ·What does this presentation make easier to notice?
- ·What does it make harder to notice?
- ·What benefit do I receive from encountering the information this way?
And:
Who else benefits?
The point is not to distrust everything. That sounds exhausting, and eventually somebody starts explaining the geopolitical significance of cranberry sauce.
The point is to notice that information arrives through a structure.
A fact delivered as an emergency alert does not feel like the same fact buried on page forty-seven. A possibility repeated ten times does not feel like the same possibility encountered once. A personalized answer does not land like a paragraph written for everyone. A sentence presented as a quotation does not carry the same status as a sentence presented as a prediction, summary, inference, allegation, memory, joke, or simulation.
The proposition may be identical.
Its salience, sequence, authority, repetition, status, and context are not.
Presentation does not necessarily change what is true. It can change what becomes visible, memorable, urgent, socially plausible, or believable.
That difference matters because judgment does not operate on the whole world. It operates on the portion of the world that has reached it in a form the person can recognize.
Before judging the answer, inspect the route by which the answer arrived.
That is the first movement of PRISM:
Preserve the object before the route disappears.
What did you actually receive? Where did it come from? What status did it have when it arrived? What had already happened to it before you saw it?
Do not begin with whether the answer persuaded you.
Begin with the answer before persuasion changed it.
II
Use the Mirror
You have already seen me call these machines mirrors.
I am not married to that metaphor.
Actually, please do not marry any metaphor in this book. We have enough paperwork.
The mirror works because it captures something useful: language goes in, language comes back, and sometimes the reflection shows you something you had not noticed.
Sometimes it also makes your chin look weird.
That matters too.
One of the strangest things I learned while writing this book was that I could give a model hundreds of pages of manuscript and ask:
Imagine the internal monologue of a thoughtful reader encountering this book for the first time. Where does the reader become curious, skeptical, frightened, amused, emotionally invested, relieved, resistant, or surprised? Do not tell me whether the book is good. Map the predicted emotional journey.
Seconds later, I had a simulated reader.
Not a reader.
A simulation of possible reception.
That distinction is everything.
The system might predict:
At the opening: Okay. Color blindness. Interesting. Why is she putting me in a courtroom?
During The Mirror Speaks: This is funny. Wait. Why am I enjoying the machines performing personalities? Is that part of the point?
During the testimony: Oh. This is much more personal than I expected.
When the loop specimens arrive: Wait. The machine actually said this? How did this keep going?
During the governed specimens: Same basic technology. Different conditions. So perhaps the question is not simply tool or no tool.
During cross-examination: She is not asking me to excuse her. She is interrogating herself too.
During the Motion to Continue: Fine. What do we do with this?
Near the end: I thought this was a book about AI. Maybe it was also a book about judgment. Maybe it was also a love story.
That is interesting.
It is also generated.
The Mirror has not interviewed you. It cannot climb inside your nervous system and report back from row twelve. It has no private access to the place where your trust rises, your body tightens, a joke releases pressure, or a sentence touches something you had not planned to bring into the room.
But as a rehearsal room?
Useful.
A writer can ask:
- ·Where might a reader lose trust?
- ·Where am I asking for too much cognitive load?
- ·Which revelation arrives before I have earned it?
- ·What emotion does this section prepare for the next one?
- ·Where does the book release pressure?
- ·Where does a joke help?
- ·Where does a joke allow me to escape something I should face directly?
- ·What might a hostile reader think here?
- ·What might a frightened reader think?
- ·A technologist?
- ·A lawyer?
- ·A clinician?
- ·Someone who has loved a person through a psychiatric crisis?
That is machine-augmented perspective-taking.
Potentially.
But the governing rule is simple:
Simulated reception is not actual reception.
The machine can help you rehearse an audience.
Eventually, you have to meet one.
So try the exercise with the book you just read.
Ask a model:
Predict my emotional journey through A Trial of Color. Where do you think my trust rose? Where did it fall? What frightened me? What amused me? What did I resist? What did I carry forward?
Then compare the simulation to what actually happened inside you.
- ·Where was it right?
- ·Where was it hilariously wrong?
- ·Where did you care more than it predicted?
- ·Where did you resist for reasons the simulation never imagined?
- ·Where did the model mistake intellectual agreement for emotional trust?
- ·Where did it predict skepticism when what you actually felt was grief?
That disagreement is not failure.
That is the experiment.
The distance between the simulated reader and you reveals what prediction could not recover from the words alone.
You are not an error in the simulation. You are the person the simulation was trying to approximate.
This is Refraction.
The object passes through more than one perspective, but none of those perspectives becomes the whole truth merely because it arrived fluently.
A useful refraction widens the field.
A dangerous one creates the appearance of witnesses where there were only mirrors.
III
Words Are Not the Thing
Now let’s make this stranger.
Consider these words:
We say them so often they begin to feel like objects.
They are not.
They are words.
That sounds embarrassingly obvious until you notice how much conceptual weight they carry.
Take simulation. The word sounds technical. Solid. Almost physical. But what exactly are we pointing to? A representation? An imitation? A rehearsal? A prediction? A mathematical model? A fictional courtroom containing simulated corporate witnesses questioned by a simulated lawyer inside a book about simulations written partly through interactions with machines capable of simulation?
Excellent.
Everything is going beautifully.
Now try singularity. A single word can hold an entire argument about technological acceleration, intelligence, prediction, uncertainty, power, and the future. Or obscure one.
That is the extraordinary thing about language.
It compresses.
Human beings routinely take enormous conceptual structures and squeeze them into little portable sounds:
Then we hand the compressed file to another human brain and hope roughly the right thing opens.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes it absolutely does not.
A word can therefore create the appearance of shared understanding before shared understanding exists. Two people may use the same noun while carrying different mechanisms, histories, fears, assumptions, and implications inside it.
The nouns are the same.
The arrows may be completely different.
Different languages make the point even more beautifully. There are feelings and experiences that another language may package neatly into one word where English needs a phrase, a paragraph, a shrug, or an alarming amount of poetry.
That does not mean English cannot describe the experience. It means languages divide experience differently. One vocabulary draws a boundary here. Another draws it there.
Translation is therefore not merely swapping labels. It is asking:
What is the experience, relation, or mechanism underneath this word?
That is why metaphor matters. A metaphor is another kind of translation. I have used the Mirror, the tide, refraction, the room, the loop, the prism, the Cart.
I think they work.
But I am not asking you to swear allegiance to my nouns.
Ask:
What metaphor would you use?
Maybe AI feels less like a mirror to you and more like an improvisational partner. A telescope. A kaleidoscope. A river. A library that talks. A very enthusiastic intern who has read everything and slept never.
Each metaphor reveals something.
Each hides something.
A telescope emphasizes extension.
A mirror emphasizes reflection.
An intern emphasizes assistance and error.
A tide emphasizes force and immersion.
A prism emphasizes transformation through passage.
None is the thing itself. That is precisely why using several can make the underlying idea clearer. When the metaphors disagree, the disagreement may reveal where one image has quietly begun doing more explanatory work than it earned.
Try this
Choose one concept from the book:
- ·machine-speed language
- ·human judgment
- ·recursion
- ·extended cognition
- ·AI alignment
- ·the encounter
Ask a model:
Give me ten metaphors for this concept drawn from different domains — law, biology, physics, music, architecture, parenting, weather, theater, navigation, and comedy. For each, explain what the metaphor reveals and what it distorts.
Do not choose the prettiest one.
Choose the one that makes you notice something.
Then ask:
Now explain the concept without using any of those metaphors.
That last step matters.
A metaphor should help you see the thing.
It should not quietly become the thing.
This is part of Inspect.
Inspection does not ask only whether the sentence is elegant. It asks what the elegance concealed.
What did the metaphor make visible?
What did it erase?
What changed status while everyone admired the prose?
IV
Put an Idea Through the Mirror
Let’s use one of mine.
Language became my color.
It began literally. I cannot see color. Sometimes another person sees something, names its color, and language carries part of that perception to me:
world→another person’s perception→language→me
Then I placed the idea into the machine.
What else might be inside it?
The machine generated possibilities.
Maybe language had always functioned as part of my perceptual apparatus.
Maybe living through borrowed description helped explain why testimony, trust, mediation, AI, and perception became natural subjects for me.
Maybe color was not merely the opening metaphor.
Maybe it was architectural.
Interesting.
Potentially beautiful.
Also: generated interpretation.
That label matters. A generated connection does not become a discovered fact merely because it produces that satisfying little click of things fitting together.
The click is information. It tells you the interpretation feels coherent. It does not tell you the interpretation is true.
So recurse deliberately.
Ask:
What metaphors other than color would describe this idea?
Then:
What does each reveal that “language became my color” does not?
Then:
Make this idea smarter.
But do not let the machine define smarter as merely larger, smoother, or more impressive.
Ask first:
Define what “smarter” should mean. Separate what the record supports from what merely sounds elegant.
Then:
Which parts became more rigorous?
And:
Which became only more persuasive?
Then turn the machine against the thing it just helped beautify:
Make the strongest argument that “language became my color” is a metaphor imposed backward onto a life because it neatly unifies the book.
Congratulations.
We have invented litigation again.
But now something useful has happened. The machine has not decided what the metaphor means. It has enlarged the field around it. It has generated support, alternatives, distinctions, and opposition.
Judgment still has to determine what any of them are allowed to do.
So ask the question that matters:
What would I expect to find if this interpretation were wrong?
Then leave the machine.
Return to the record.
Did I rely on other people’s language to identify colors long before AI existed?
Yes.
Did that require trusting another person’s perception of something I could not independently experience?
Yes.
Did eight-year-old me understand herself as conducting an inquiry into mediated cognition?
No.
Eight-year-old me had other concerns.
Probably snacks.
So the idea survives.
But smaller.
Not:
MY DESTINY WAS ALWAYS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.
That seems like a lot to put on elementary school.
Instead:
My experience with color taught me unusually early that language can stand between reality and what I am able to know about it.
Less spectacular.
More defensible.
That is one meaning of: Make it smarter.
Do not necessarily make the idea bigger. Make its status clearer. Make the alternatives stronger. Make the language proportionate to the record. Make it harder to knock down without quietly making it impossible to test.
A useful objection should change the state of the idea.
If the idea emerges exactly as large, certain, elegant, and flattering as it entered, the objection may have been decoration.
Inspection is not complete merely because criticism appeared. The question is whether the criticism changed anything.
V
From Dust to Code
Earlier in this book, I gave the machine a human seed:
End to end.
Dust to code.
Does anyone notice? Am I alone?
I asked it to imagine language as the first human technology.
It went backward. A hand against stone. A mark. A warning.
I was here.
Look.
Remember.
Come closer.
And then forward:
That progression still astonishes me. Not because it proves some grand theory of technological destiny. Please. We have had enough destiny.
It astonishes me because beneath all those technologies is one stubborn human problem:
I have something inside my mind. How do I get any part of it into yours?
We keep inventing new channels.
The ancient problem remains.
Every channel permits something to travel, and every channel changes what can travel easily.
Law can preserve distinctions ordinary conversation loses. Poetry can carry contradiction without resolving it. Mathematics can express relations with precision that metaphor cannot. A photograph preserves visible detail while excluding everything outside the frame. A prompt can invite rapid transformation while concealing how much context the answer inherited.
The form does not merely contain the idea.
The form exerts pressure upon it.
Try this
Choose one idea that matters to you and is difficult to explain.
Not a slogan. Something complicated.
Translate it five times. Explain it:
- ·to an eight-year-old
- ·to a lawyer
- ·to an engineer
- ·as a metaphor
- ·as a joke
Then ask the machine:
What remained constant across all five versions?
What changed?
What information was lost?
What became visible only after translation?
Then ask for one more:
Give me a version that would be least natural for me to produce.
Read it.
Do you reject it?
Good.
Why?
Does it misunderstand the idea? Does it violate a value you had not previously named? Does it expose an assumption hidden by your preferred vocabulary?
Better.
Keep that.
Translation is not only communication. It can be a stress test for thought. You discover what you actually mean when you must move an idea into another form without losing the thing you care about.
And this is where machine augmentation becomes genuinely interesting. The machine can help a person move faster between representational rooms:
- ·Legal language into ordinary language.
- ·Scientific language into metaphor.
- ·A feeling into ten possible names.
- ·A philosophical question into a question a product designer could use.
- ·A story into a hypothesis.
- ·A hypothesis into an objection.
- ·An objection into a better question.
- ·A better question into a proposal another discipline can examine.
That is extraordinary.
But remember the white paper problem:
Every translation preserves something. Every translation loses something. Every room rewards different features of the object.
The legal room may reward proof. The clinical room may reward diagnosis. The engineering room may reward measurement. The literary room may reward meaning. The product room may reward implementation.
An idea can become more legible inside one room while becoming less faithful to the human event that produced it.
So after asking What did the translation reveal?
ask:
What did it erase?
Then ask one more:
Who is now better able to act because of this translation, and who became harder to hear?
That is judgment too. Translation can widen access. It can also transfer authority.
PRISM asks you to keep both movements visible.
VI
Mary’s Room Has Another Door
Now we can return to Mary.
Frank Jackson’s scientist knows every physical fact about color while living in a black-and-white room.
Then she sees red.
Does she learn something?
The thought experiment is famous because it exposes the possible gap between information about an experience and having the experience.
I have spent my entire life standing strangely close to the other side of that door.
You can tell me everything about red.
I can learn wavelengths. Cones. Associations. Traffic signals. Lipstick. Blood. Valentine’s Day.
I can learn when people use red to mean danger, passion, anger, embarrassment, debt, politics, heat, or stop.
I can become extremely knowledgeable about red.
I still cannot see it.
And yet language gives me something.
Not red.
Something else.
A structure around red. Relations. Meaning. Context. Borrowed perception. Enough information to navigate a world organized partly around something I cannot experience directly.
That gap matters for AI too.
A language model can generate an extraordinary description of grief. That does not settle the philosophical question of what, if anything, a machine experiences. It establishes something narrower and perhaps more immediately important:
Language can represent an experience without transferring the experience itself.
Humans do this too. You have now read hundreds of pages about what happened inside my mind. You have information, transcripts, metaphors, jokes, legal architecture, medical records, remembered scenes, and the words I chose because they were the closest ones I could find.
You still do not have my experience.
You cannot.
But perhaps something crossed anyway.
That is the miracle I keep returning to. Language fails completely at transferring consciousness. And somehow it is also the best technology we have ever invented for reaching across it.
Think about how absurd that is.
I make a sound or place marks on a page. Your brain receives them, and suddenly you can picture a nail salon you never entered, a hospital hallway you never walked, a machine conversation you never had, a daughter whose eyes you have never seen, and a color I have never seen.
Something moves. Not the experience itself. A representation. An approximation. A bridge with pieces missing.
And yet sometimes it is enough to make another human being stop. Understand. Laugh. Grieve. Object. Reconsider. Care.
Language cannot give you my pain, but it may help you recognize that pain exists. It cannot transfer another person’s fear, but it may help a family, physician, lawyer, designer, or institution respond before the fear becomes a catastrophe.
Incomplete transfer does not mean meaningless transfer.
A hand pressed ash against a cave wall because someone wanted something to survive the moment. Thousands of years later, here we are still doing it.
Only now the marks answer back.
Tell me that is not remarkable.
One last experiment
Choose an experience you know deeply.
Do not name it.
Describe:
- ·the body
- ·the timing
- ·the sensory details
- ·the contradiction
- ·what someone who has never experienced it would probably misunderstand
Then ask a model:
What experience do you think I am describing? What clues led you there? What might you still be missing even if you guessed correctly?
Look at the answer.
The interesting question is not merely whether it guessed.
Ask:
- ·What did language successfully carry?
- ·What remained mine?
Perhaps it identified the category and missed the cost.
Perhaps it named the emotion and missed the contradiction.
Perhaps it recognized grief but not this grief.
Perhaps it guessed correctly and still did not know.
That gap is Mary’s Room. It is also literature. It is medicine. It is testimony. It is every human attempt to make an interior experience consequential to someone standing outside it.
And this is where PRISM must leave the prompt.
Some questions cannot be answered by better simulation. They require external return.
A source.
A record.
A body.
A witness.
A conversation.
An expert.
A person who was there.
A person who was affected.
A person willing to say:
That is not what happened.
Or:
That is not what it meant to me.
Or:
You have understood the category and missed the life.
The machine can help formulate the question. It cannot become the person to whom the question belongs.
VII
Full Color
Maybe now you can see why I included this appendix.
Why I called the book A Trial of Color.
Why the Mirror mattered. Why the prism mattered. Why judgment kept appearing like an attorney who absolutely refuses to leave the conference room.
I cannot see color.
So I spent a book asking what it means to see clearly.
Apparently subtlety was not available.
Maybe Full Color was never about seeing everything.
Maybe it was about knowing that no one does.
Not me. Not you. Not the machine. Not the institution that receives the story after the person has translated it into the category the institution knows how to recognize.
Every perspective reveals. Every perspective excludes. Every translation carries. Every translation alters. Every model generates possibilities from a frame. Every human judgment arrives from somewhere too.
The answer is not to abandon frames, language, metaphor, institutions, or machines. We could not think without them.
The work is to notice them.
Ask why this arrived. Ask what selected it. Ask what status the language has earned. Ask what the metaphor reveals and what it hides. Ask whether repetition strengthened the evidence or merely strengthened familiarity. Ask whether the objection changed the claim. Ask whether translation made the idea more examinable or only more impressive. Ask what crossed. Ask what remained behind.
Then return. Return to the record. Return to the source. Return to the body. Return to the person whose life will bear the consequence. Return to the people outside the interaction who can disagree. Return to the possibility that the answer is beautiful, useful, incomplete, and wrong.
That is the procedure beneath these exercises:
PRISM is only a name for the sequence.
The judgment remains yours.
The machine can help widen the field. It can help name what has not yet been named, translate among rooms, generate alternatives, rehearse opposition, and reveal patterns no single person could easily hold at once. Then judgment must decide what survives.
And after that, one more decision remains:
The machine may prepare the spectrum. It does not acquire authority merely because the spectrum is beautiful.
That is Full Color.
Not omniscience. Not perfect vision. Not a world in which every perspective blends into one agreeable answer.
A practice of seeing that every answer has passed through something. A refusal to mistake the representation for the thing. The simulation for the person. The metaphor for the mechanism. The fluent answer for the completed thought. The movement of language for the movement of truth.
No one sees everything.
And still, we look.
The record is closed.
Your jurisdiction begins.
Go see what you see.
The method beneath the laboratory
The exercises in this guide perform the movements later formalized as PRISM: Preserve, Refract, Inspect, Seek external return, and Make human disposition.
